I'm new to fan fiction in general, but especially Live Journal, which I've only just discovered a few weeks ago. There's a lot out there, and it's getting overwhelming trying to sort through all the fic. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good in character ACD book!verse fics or authors. Slash (but I'm only into Holmes/Watson), gen, hurt/comfort, case fic - I love it all, just so long as the characterization is there. (Granada!verse is okay too!) Thanks!

Are you looking for gen, or slash?

(Tsk on my, I should've included het and femslash too, but I'm sort of exclusively on the slash in this fandom).

Alrighty, a couple of recs. I'm more of a BBC Sherlock fan, but I do keep finding nice things in the ACD verse too. I can't speak to characterization but you might try here (http://katieforsythe.livejournal.com/) for a whole list by one katieforsythe, and here (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Lefaym/pseuds/Lefaym/works?selected_tags[]=117953) for an AO3 author with some more. One in the second set is a 2009 movie fic, fyi.

I'm sure some others will have lots more to offer though. And try the book!verse tag on this comm too.

I think it's sort of awesome and hilarious that even I, not even officially a bookverse fan, has even managed to locate and love her fic.

Shall I be the first to recommend Katie Forsythe (http://www.liquidfic.org/katie.html) to you then? She ought to keep you reading for quite some time!

And, there's a pretty good list of canon fics and authors over here: http://www.liquidfic.org/Holmes_Watson.html

You can check the recs in [livejournal.com profile] 221b_recs for the books: http://221b-recs.livejournal.com/tag/verse%3A%20acd%20books
or Granada: http://221b-recs.livejournal.com/tag/verse%3A%20granada

Oh my god please please read One Week (http://janeturenne.livejournal.com/29678.html) by [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne (Holmes/Watson, NC-17 in parts). It's over 40,000 words and it's split up into seven parts, one for each day of the week, and it's absolutely amazing.

Oh I am all over this.

A Brother Noble by KCS and PGF are two fantastic authors and this colab is one of my favorite fanworks ever. It's a gen and shows the great friendship between Holmes and Watson, and best of all it's long and a case fic. Both authors have dozens of works but this is my favorite.

This is a great site that covers all verse but a majority of it is book, Granada, and 09 verse though a lot of them aren't mentioning the verse.

Ariandes String is one of my favourites. She's more well known for her BBCsherlock fics, but she writes some very good book canon fics as well.

charlotteyonge

very in-character Holmes/Watson stories, many of them are multi-chapter.

http://charlotteyonge.livejournal.com/tag/holmes/watson%20slash

Candle-beck

If you want angsty Holmes/Watson stories, Candle-beck is very good. Often Holmes/Watson is often too idealized, Candle-beck fics show how utterly flawed and problematic it can be if Holmes and Watson got together romantically considering how different the two men are. Most writers see their differences as complementary, Candle-beck shows you how they can clash.

Also check out http://holmesian-recs.livejournal.com/ It hasn't been updated in over a year, but there's some quality book canon fics recommended here.

Seconding the rec for One Week by the marvelous [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne That is one fic you can really sink your teeth into, and was hotter than the blazing fires of hell :) And also the ones for KCS/PGF... go read everything they've written, immediately.

She hasn't been mentioned yet so I'm going to direct you to the LJ of [livejournal.com profile] tweedisgood, who has flawless voices, especially her Holmes one, as does [livejournal.com profile] katelear

Specifically, I have to rec one I've just read, Through A Glass, Darkly, by [livejournal.com profile] mainecoon76, which is an amazing story based around the events of The Final Problem. It's been done so many times before, but this one is a stand out. It's mostly Canon, with some Granada!verse mixed in for good measure :) (http://holmestice.livejournal.com/84121.html)
