The title I have saved is 'Three Years Gone' but unfortunately I deleted author and location.   BBC version Sherlock leaves after his 'death' to take care of the remains of Moriarty's henchmen for 3 years. During this time Mycroft sends him an occasional letter of John's well being. John learns to play the violin and does so each year at a memorial for Sherlock. Sherlock returns in the end after Moran makes an attempt on John who also told John that Sherlock was still alive.  Reunion at Baker Street. 

I believe this is part of a series (?) if I remember correctly and would love to read it again but for the life of me... can't find. TY
