A Few Questions

A few questions, pertaining to book!canon, and what is most widely believed by writers and readers of the Holmes fandom. (Sorry if they're in the wrong place or silly questions. I want to get it right. :)

1. Did Watson train as a doctor before Afghanistan? Or did he join the army and train as a doctor with them? I'm assuming its the former, how long would it have taken him to train?

2. What was Holmes' childhood like? Childhood, but mostly his 20s. Was it good, bad?  Then (in his 20s) was he still studying, or doing what he wanted? In other words was he able to run away and do what he wanted?

3. How old were they when they met in 'Scarlet'? (Rough ages) and what are their age differences?

Thanks, if they don't make sense, just ask me to clarify. And if this is just in the completely wrong place, I'll delete it. :)

He'd Say it Was Worth the Wounds

I have a query to the entire Sherlock Holmes LJ Community (though this seemed the most appropriate place to stick it):

I viewed my Sherlock Holmes last night with two of my roommates (we were all wanting for some Jude Law...), and there is a bit of dialogue that I'm curious about.

You're all familiar with the scene after the dock explosion, when Holmes is disguised as Watson's doctor and is trying to evade Mary.  She comes out into the hallway and yells "Please!"  He stops, and she draws closer, saying a few lines that  I don't remember word for word.  Then this exchange takes place:

Mary:  He'd say it was worth the wounds.
Holmes:  *indistinct mumble*  -  *walks away*
Mary:  Solve this!  Whatever it takes.

On more than one occasion I've tried replaying that snip over and over, attempting to understand what it is he says.  There's nothing in the subtitles that helps.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what it is that Holmes is mumbling under his breath?

((My only guess is that it sounded something kinda of like: "I should have known."  But that doesn't completely make sense.))
