Canon story search

I'm not looking for a fic but for a canon story (sorry if this is not allowed, but I don't know where esle to ask...) It's set after the Hiatus and before the events of "The Three Garridebs." I don't remeber what the case was, but near the end Holmes and Watson are sitting in a restaurant (?) and Watson notices Holmes looking at him with "tenderness" or "affection" or something along those lines (I think it´'s because Watson has just told him that he likes working with him or something like that.)

You know the ones I mean. 'Holmes was disguised as a horse in STUD', 'Watson was married six times'. That kind of thing. If you just know the theory, tell me! If you know the theory and have links to a source of any sort (your own journal will do, if you've expounded on an insane or strange theory at some point), I will send you internet cookies and love you forever.
Anything will do, as long as it is to do with the canon.

I spent the past few days happily reading H/W fics, what a guilty pleasure (thanks to this site. LOL).
What I know of Sherlock Holmes, comes from tv series that i half remember, fics I have read, but mostly my interest in H/W surfaced because of the latest Sherlock Holmes movie.
Do you think I should read the actual original works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Which stories do you recommend (are there any with subtext in them)? Can I find the stories online somewhere?

Holmes comes home (or to a shared hotel room, I dunno), and asks Watson if he would be alarmed to be near/share close quarters with a madman, or something along those lines. Watson is confused and answers in the negative. Holmes seems satisfied by this, and I think that's when the conversation ends.

A Few Questions

1. Did Watson train as a doctor before Afghanistan? Or did he join the army and train as a doctor with them? I'm assuming its the former, how long would it have taken him to train?
2. What was Holmes' childhood like? Childhood, but mostly his 20s. Was it good, bad? Then (in his 20s) was he still studying, or doing what he wanted? In other words was he able to run away and do what he wanted?
3. How old were they when they met in 'Scarlet'? (Rough ages) and what are their age differences?

Who is older? GR movie is really my intro to the slash and its obvious that RDJ holmes is older, but is that also canon? The heights are in direct opposite to canon, so forgive me if I dont fully trust GR for my canon sources...lol.
